Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in his parliamentary constituency of Varanasi.

The IRRI South Asia Regional Centre is aimed at boosting crop production, seed quality and the nutritional value of the cash crop of rice.

Besides, the Centre would collaborate with partners to enhance farm knowhow, augment farm income and deliver advanced research, teaching and services pertaining to rice.

Targetting to double the farmers’ income by 2022, the Modi government has employed a multipronged approach encompassing input cost reduction, facilitating better prices, providing post harvest and warehousing facilities, industry integration etc.

The IRRI is also positioned as a cog in the same scheme, which would serve as a hub for rice research and training in the South Asian and SAARC regions. It would teach scientists and agriculturists about latest technologies for sustainable farming, digital crop monitoring and demonstration fields.

IRRI DG Matthew Morell noted the Centre would strengthen research and capacity of rice growing nations in the SAARC region and contribute to sustainable growth targets.
