Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath today visited and addressed the closing ceremony of 3-day ‘UP Defence Expo 2018’ in the industrial town of Kanpur.

The mega event showcased the proposed Bundelkhand Defence Corridor as a preferred investment destination for Indian defence manufacturers. Similar expositions had earlier been held at Aligarh and Jhansi following the announcement of the Corridor by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on February 21, 2018, while inaugurating the UP Investors Summit.

The Expo was hosted in consort with the defence ministry, domestic defence manufacturers and defence R&D agencies. Senior defence ministry and public sector defence manufacturing officials participated and deliberated in the expo, which provided a platform for knowledge sharing between buyers and sellers. It was inaugurated by UP industrial development minister Satish Mahana on Wednesday.

In his address, Yogi said the Corridor was poised to attracting investment of almost Rs 50,000 crore in future and creating large number of job opportunities. The state government has already identified more than 5,000 hectares for the Corridor and the land acquisition process is likely to begin in the next 1-2 months.

The Corridor would span 6 districts viz. Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow and Chitrakoot.

India is the world’s largest military hardware importer and among the top military spenders. For modernising its armed forces, India plans to acquire equipment worth almost US$ 250 billion by 2027 and in this context, the Modi government wants to promote the indigenous defence industry for saving foreign exchange and catering its sustained security needs. Another Defence Corridor is coming up near Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
